It was a good weekend for Emma Stone. Her latest film “Poor Things” bowed at the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals to rapturous reviews, and only a couple of days later she skyrocketed into second place in our Oscar odds for Best Actress based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users as of this writing. SEEVenice Film Festival reviews: ‘Poor Things’ is ‘bonkers’ and ‘astonishing,’ Emma Stone is ‘stupendous’

From the graph, you can see that Stone was way down in eighth place on September 1. Sight unseen, it was hard to anticipate what her “Poor Things” performance would look like since the film is directed by the idiosyncratic Yorgos Lanthimos. He got Oscar’s attention with 2009’s “Dogtooth” (Best International Feature nominee) and 2015’s “The Lobster” (Best Original Screenplay nominee) before his big awards breakthrough with 2018’s “The Favourite” (10 nominations including Best Picture). However, his eccentric style hasn’t always meshed with the academy’s tastes: his 2017 film “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” didn’t receive any nominations.

But then the fantastical “Poor Things,” which stars Stone as a woman brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist, made its grand entrance on the festival circuit, and by September 5 Stone was already in second place for a performance critics have called “fearless,” “dazzling,” and the “boldest” of her career. It hasn’t been very long since she won the Best Actress Oscar for “La La Land” (2016), though. Can she really win again so soon?

SEETelluride Film Festival: ‘Poor Things’ thrusts Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo into the awards race

There’s no reason she couldn’t. A number of actors have won multiple Oscars in quick succession; Sean Penn‘s wins for “Mystic River” and “Milk” were five years apart. Hilary Swank‘s victories for “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Million Dollar Baby” were also five years apart. So were Daniel Day-Lewis‘s prizes for “There Will Be Blood” and “Lincoln.” Mahershala Ali went two-for-two for “Moonlight” and “Green Book” just two years apart from each other. Sometimes a performer gets on a hot streak in their career when they can do no wrong in voters’ eyes.

Stone has been on such a hot streak for the better part of a decade. She broke through with her first nomination for “Birdman” (2014) before her “La La Land” triumph two years later. And then just two years after that she was nominated for the third time for Lanthimos’s aforementioned “The Favourite.” And since “The Favourite” itself was a surprise Best Actress winner for Olivia Colman, there’s no reason “Poor Things” couldn’t work the same magic for Stone.
