The first photos have been unveiled of actress Angelina Jolie in the role of Greek opera singer Maria Callas in “Maria.” The independent film began production in October under a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement. Will this biopic, directed by Pablo Larrain, bring Jolie back to the Oscars? See one photo of Jolie above and the other below.

Larrain said in a statement, “I am incredibly excited to start production on ‘Maria,’ which I hope will bring Maria Callas’s remarkable life and work to audiences all around the world, thanks to the magnificent script by Steve Knight, the work of the entire cast and crew, and especially, Angelina’s brilliant work and extraordinary preparation.”

Jolie won a competitive Oscar for her breakthrough supporting performance in “Girl, Interrupted” (1999). After that she earned her lone Best Actress bid for “Changeling” (2008). But then she received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the motion picture academy in 2014.

Larrain also has a strong Oscar track record. His 2012 film “No,” about the campaign to defeat dictator Augusto Pinochet in Chile’s 1988 referendum, earned that nation an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. He also directed a pair of English-language biopics that earned academy recognition. “Jackie” (2016), about First Lady Jackie Kennedy, was nominated for Best Actress (Natalie Portman), Best Costume Design and Best Original Score. “Spencer” (2021), which told a fictionalized story about Princess Diana, was also nominated for Best Actress (Kristen Stewart).

The director’s latest film, “El Conde,” imagines the aforementioned Pinochet as a centuries-old vampire who longs to die; it premiered at the Venice Film Festival on August 31 before streaming on Netflix starting on September 15.
