Addressing the MIA Market, the Revenant and Mr Robot outfit’s Chief Creative Officer, who used to run HBO drama, said viewers to Anonymous’ projects will soon see the fruits of this strategy. Upcoming projects include the likes of Time Bandits, the Apple TV+ series from Taika Waititi, Jemaine Clement and Iain Morris.

“The integrity of who we’re working with hasn’t changed but the spirit of openness and the new people who haven’t worked with us before, well, people will see that,” he said. “We’re trying to introduce entirely new filmmakers into the repertoire of our company.”

Levine was speaking alongside International President David Davoli in Rome, Italy at the film and TV industry event MIA.

Talking the confab through Anonymous’ recent strategy, Levine said the company has “got involved with cinema at different stages in the last 18 months.”

“For cinema we were always [getting involved at] source and now I think we are looking at movies just prior to production and release and seeing if we can help guide those [projects] to market, so collectively we are trying to approach both film and TV as an assistive, supportive business,” he explained.

Levine and Davoli also addressed question marks over the future for theatrically-released movies.

“I don’t think theatrical is going away I think it’s shifting and changing,” said Davoli. “On the exhibition side they are trying to figure out how to get families to come to the cinema in the U.S. When you take childcare, gas, parking and the tickets into account it can be several hundred dollars to take your family to the theater, so in some ways it’s cost prohibitive.”

Davoli also pointed to the recent practice of mega-stars like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé “going straight to the exhibitors and bypassing distributors,” which he described as “intriguing and something we will see more of.”

Levine said it would be “amazing if we ended up with a theater for our work.”

He added: “There are two different theaters – one for your own channel, which has always been a dream, and then the theater of the collective, which we will always try to achieve.”

Last week, Anonymous let go of around 8% of staff, with cuts at the company attributed by sources to efforts to remain competitive during a time of reckoning for an already economically unstable industry coming back from the strikes.

MIA Market is running all this week, featuring talks from the likes of Paramount’s Nicole Clemens, Miramax’s Marc Helwig and director Ari Folman.
