Annual watercolor show makes a 'Splash!'

Watercolor is an art medium tailor-made for Florida. Sunny, colorful, breezy and often flamboyant, watercolor is as delightful as an ocean breeze.

Nowhere locally are watercolor’s many charms as visible as in “Splash! of Watercolor,” Brevard Watercolor Society’s annual celebration of watercolor art.

The Society’s major annual show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17 and 18, at the Azan Shriner Center, 1591 West Eau Gallie Blvd., Melbourne.

Brevard Watercolor Society is set to make a splash with "Splash," its annual watercolor show. The event exhibits the talents of Brevard’s best artists, such as last year’s Best of Show winner Therese Ferguson.

Watercolor Society member Kimber Musacchio credits “Splash!” with inspiration and encouragement.

“I’ve always loved looking at watercolors and the demonstrations at Splash,” Musacchio said. “The atmosphere encouraged me to try it for myself. I’m a total newbie but hooked!”

The caliber of the art on display - such as “Yellow Boat,” Therese Ferguson’s 2023 Best in Show rendering of a rowboat - is impressive, but “Splash” is much more than an exhibition and sale of artwork. A “Paint-a-Round” is one of the attendee magnets.

“All weekend there are activities and demonstrations, including the very popular 'Paint-a-Round,' where a painting is started by one artist and is passed through multiple artists and then returned for final touches to the original artist,” explained member Laurie Griffin.

Raffles and silent auctions support the group’s art and education fund, as do the “smallworks,” 8x8 paintings for sale. A marketplace with unique prints and merchandise provides the opportunity to meet and support local artists. Children’s activities, a display of high school and college students’ artwork and lunch for purchase round out the day.

“Watercolorists from across the state look forward to viewing the exhibited works as well as the paint-around activities,” said BWS member Susan Bragg.

“It’s a wonderful way to learn about art opportunities.”
