The latest from Giant Drag’s Annie Hardy is ominous and unsettling. “Shadow Mode” persists with a low-buzzing synth and an eerie, familiar piano melody. Ghostly whispers penetrate the background. Hardy’s vocals are piercing and at times morphed into shredded cries, leaving them exposed and raw. “In the dark night I called your name,” she sings in the beginning — a lyric that becomes especially charged with emotion upon learning that Hardy’s forthcoming Rules follows the incomprehensible passing of her son Silvio to SIDS at only 17 days old, followed by the death of Silvio’s father, Robert Paulson, from a drug overdose. Listen below.

Rules is out 4/7 on Full Psycho/American Primitive Records. Check out previous single “Want.”
