Anne Hathaway is a gritty journalist in trouble in The Last Thing He Wanted trailer

Talk about all-consuming work.

In the first trailer for British-American political thriller The Last Thing He Wanted, Anne Hathaway‘s reporter “with a moral compass” who’s “always a step ahead” finds herself the subject of the story she’s trying to break. Based on Joan Didion’s novel of the same name, the film — which is set to premiere at Sundance Film Festival on January 27 — is directed by Dee Rees (Mudbound) and also stars Ben Affleck, Rosie Perez, and Willem Dafoe.

The fast-paced clip shows Hathaway’s Elena McMahon follow a story concerning arms dealing to Contras in Central America, only to discover her father (Dafoe) could be involved in the deal. Soon enough there’s car chases, guns, and a whole lot of tension as Elena tries to navigate the dangerous narrative she’s somehow become part of.

The Last Thing He Wanted premieres on Monday night at the Sundance Film Festival and comes to Netflix February 21. Watch the trailer above.
