Anna Kendrick Played With Trolls — But Justin Timberlake Was More of a He-Man Guy

With the upcoming release of the DreamWorks animated film Trolls, the funky-haired dolls that inspired the movie are having a resurgence. It’s hardly their first. The Thomas Dan-invented playthings first came to prominence in the U.S. in the early 1960s. They returned to toy stores in the 1970s, though today they are best remembered for their pop-culture prime in the mid-’90s.

That’s right when Anna Kendrick, who voices the impossibly upbeat troll princess Poppy, was coming of age. “I had troll dolls,” Kendrick told Yahoo Movies at the film’s recent Los Angeles press day (watch above). “I had the bellybutton troll dolls. I had the pencil topper troll dolls, which made you feel sassy when you were writing because the little guy’s hair was going.

“But even then I was like, ‘Why do I like these dolls so much? They’re so weird looking. But they’re just so cute.”

Kendrick’s costar Justin Timberlake, who plays the moody and paranoid Branch, was more into the more “male-centric” toys. “I didn’t have any trolls, I missed the troll wave,” he said. “I really liked He-Man a lot. I had Star Wars toys. I had some G.I. Joes.”

That’s not to say he wasn’t “in touch with his feminine side,” as Kendrick pointed out. “I did have a Cabbage Patch Kid. And I had a Teddy Ruxpin,” Timberlake said. “I didn’t discriminate.”

Trolls opens everywhere Nov. 4.
