Ann Arbor Art Fair, Concert of Colors: 5 things to do this weekend

From downtown Detroit to Ann Arbor, signature art and music events will be bringing this weekend to life across metro Detroit. In addition, feline enthusiasts can take in an all-breed cat show in Taylor. Here are five things to do for the weekend of July 21-23:

Ann Arbor Art Fair

This venerable event that spans nearly 30 blocks is made up of three independently juried art fairs: the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair, the Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair and the Ann Arbor State Street Art Fair. It includes nearly 1,000 artist booths, three live music stages, art demonstrations, international exhibits, food and more.

Also part of the fun: live demonstrations from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild; live painting by HGTV’s "Bargain Block" star Keith Bynum; glass blowing by the Toledo Museum of Art; chalk work by David Zinn, and art activities presented by the DIA, Clay Works, Be Creative Studios, the University of Michigan Natural History Museum and Creative Washtenaw.

10 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday in downtown Ann Arbor. Free admission.

Concert of Colors

This 31st edition of the annual celebration of cultural diversity will feature events indoors and outdoors at various venues. It will showcase everything from global music and cuisine to films, poetry and children’s activities. Among the nearly 40 artists scheduled to perform are Julian Marley, Don Was, Simon Shaheen and Thornetta Davis.

The festival runs through Sunday at the Detroit Institute of Arts, along with entertainment at the Arab American National Museum, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, Hellenic Museum of Michigan, Scarab Club, Detroit Historical Society Auditorium, Carr Center, the DSO's Sosnick Courtyard, Third Man Records, the University of Michigan Detroit Center and the Michigan Science Center. Free admission.

Riverfront Music Festival

This inaugural festival will feature performances by Monica and Ashanti along with local R&B artists Brielle, Neisha Neshae and Baby Black, and DJs including DJ Envy. There will also be a fashion show featuring rap personality Saucy Santana, food trucks and retail vendors. The event is for ages 21 and older.

Noon-11 p.m. Saturday at Hart Plaza, downtown Detroit. Tickets are $25-$125.

Cat Show

Learn about specific pedigreed breeds and connect with breeders at this all-breed Cat Fanciers' Association show sponsored by the Motor City Jazz Club and Midwest Persian Tabby Fanciers. Among its offerings are educational rings for spectators and exhibitors, visitor choice awards and rescue adoptions.

9 a.m-5 p.m. Saturday at the Taylor Sportsplex, 13333 Telegraph in Taylor. $8 adults, $7 seniors and youths, $20 families and free to children younger than 6.

Community Fun Day

This second annual event hosted by the Belle Isle Conservancy in collaboration with the Detroit Parks Coalition's Freedom Arts Festival will feature an afternoon of art, music, dance, storytelling, games, food trucks and more.

Noon-4 p.m. Saturday at the Belle Isle Aquarium in Detroit. Free.
