Anita Hill Reflects on Her Place in History and the 1991 Supreme Court Vote

On Today, Savannah Guthrie sat down with Anita Hill and talked about the upcoming HBO film Confirmation. The movie portrays Hill’s 1991 testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding sexual harassment allegations against then Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. “It’s always with me. But there are moments when I relive it more strongly,” said Hill, “And, of course, seeing it in film brings that back to me.”

Kerry Washington was tasked with playing Hill onscreen. A meeting between the actress and the attorney confirmed for Hill that Washington was the right woman for the job. “I think she wanted to know not only how I felt during the confirmation hearing, but what was I thinking,” explained Hill, “And that really was encouraging. To have someone wanting to know, What was my thinking pattern? What was going on in my mind during this whole episode?”

The U.S. Senate ended up confirming Thomas for the Supreme Court by one of the smallest margins in history. Hill reflected on the emotions over her place within the controversy. “Well, I’m really at peace with my role in history,” she said. “I don’t think I have to become at peace with him on the Supreme Court.”
