Animal Services confirms stray dogs euthanized after deadly attack in north Lubbock

The three dogs involved in a deadly attack early Tuesday in north Lubbock have been euthanized after Animal Control deemed them to be without owners.

Steven Greene, director of the City of Lubbock Animal Services, said after the dogs were put down, Animal Services sent the bodies off to a state lab in Austin to be tested for rabies.

"We usually get those results back in about a 48-hour period," he said. "We have not got those results as of now."

On Wednesday, police identified a 64-year-old man as the apparent victim of a dog attack that left him dead and another person injured early Tuesday in north Lubbock.

Police say preliminary reports indicate Jack Looney died from injuries resulting from being attacked by dogs and was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS in the 2500 block of Cesar Chavez Drive.

Police originally responded to the Buddy Holly Recreational around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday for reports of a woman being attacked by dogs and a reported dead body nearby.

Officers and Animal Control responded to the scene, where Animal Control eventually captured the three dogs by Tuesday evening.

Even though this attack did occur, Greene said it's not cause for concern of an ongoing, imminent threat.

He said individuals should carry a cell phone when out in case of emergencies and be aware of their surroundings.

Individuals can contact Animal Control at 806-775-3357 if they see a stray animal.

"If you see any animals out, contact us and we can get somebody out there and give them the help they need," Greene said.
