Animal Collective Prep New Live Album for ‘Sung Tongs’ 20th Anniversary Reissue
Animal Collective will release a new live album as part of a special 20th anniversary reissue of their 2004 LP, Sung Tongs, out Oct. 4 via Domino.
Sung Tongs Live at the Theatre at Ace Hotel captures a 2018 concert in Los Angeles, during which Animal Collective’s Avey Tare and Panda Bear performed Sung Tongs in its entirety (while also adding a rendition of the Sung Tongs-era deep cut, “Covered in Frogs”). Accompanying the reissue announcement is the pair’s live rendition of “Kids on Holiday,” which retains the original’s jittery folk surrealism, but with new percussion adding a potent live energy.

The 20th anniversary of Sung Tongs will get a special double LP vinyl release, with one disc pressed on ruby red vinyl and the other on canary yellow. Sung Tongs Live at the Theatre at Ace Hotel will similarly arrive as a two LP set, pressed on neon orange and light green vinyl (the live album will also be released digitally). All physical formats are available to pre-order now.
Sung Tongs was a critically-acclaimed indie hit upon its release in 2004 and helped cement Animal Collective’s place as one of the most exciting and inventive groups of the new millennium. In its original review, Rolling Stone called Sung Tongs “one of the more creative and accomplished records you’ll hear this year,” filled with myriad reference points but still “its own creature” with “plenty of virtuosity and flair.”
The 20th anniversary of Sung Tongs is actually one of two anniversaries Animal Collective marked this year, the other being 15 years for their 2009 classic, Merriweather Post Pavilion. That album also received a special new vinyl pressing, complete with a limited edition 10-inch version of “My Girls” with a live BBC Session version of “From a Beach” on the flip side.
