Angelina Jolie in talks to play godlike being in Marvel's The Eternals

Angelina Jolie may be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Maleficient actress is in talks to star in the upcoming Marvel Studios film The Eternals, about the endless lives of beings who were part of a genetic experiment that also created life on Earth, sources tell EW.

In Marvel lore, the Eternals were ridiculously beautiful godlike beings created by the Celestials as a force for good. And who are the Celestials? Remember the mining city of Knowhere from Guardians of the Galaxy, which is nestled inside a giant floating severed head? That’s a Celestial.

The Eternals were guardians of Earth but clashed with the Deviants, who were creatures also crafted by the Celestials — as cattle for consumption.

The Deviants are mutated and grotesque, and operate as a kind of cult. They believe Earth is their rightful property.

Marvel had no comment on the casting news, which was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter’s Mia Galuppo.

It’s unclear which characters will be featured in the film, which is being directed by Chinese-born filmmaker Chloe Zhao (2017’s The Rider, 2015’s Songs My Brother Taught Me.) She’s currently in post-production on a film called Nomadland, starring Frances McDormand as a woman who loses everything she has during the economic recession and travels the American Southwest in her van/home.

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has previously said The Eternals would exist somewhat beyond the continuity of the known Marvel Cinematic Universe, spanning eons in the lives of these characters.

It doesn’t yet have a confirmed release date.
