Angelina Jolie admitted that she’s had a long road to recovery after her split from Brad Pitt. The actress spoke candidly in an interview with Vogue ahead of the launch of her new brand Atelier Jolie.

Though Jolie, 48, doesn’t directly mention Pitt, 59, in the interview, she does discuss her mental state and what has been going on across the last number of years. Jolie has been somewhat shielded from the public eye since her split from Pitt in 2016 and has only made occasional public appearances.

She tells that outlet that she stepped back from film work “seven years ago, only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots. We had a lot of healing to do. We’re still finding our footing.”

In discussing her journey to finding her own personal fashion sense, Jolie again alludes to her breakup which occurred after an incident on a private jet in which, Jolie alleged in court documents, Pitt was physically violent to her and at least one of their six children.

“I went through something where I was hurt, I had a therapist ask if I would try wearing a flowing garment. Sounds silly, but I assumed that pants and boots projected a ‘tougher’ look, a stronger me. But was I strong enough to be soft? At the time, no. I felt vulnerable,” the Maleficent actress told Vogue. “I’m still understanding who I am at 48. I guess I’m in transition as a person.”

She continued: “I feel a bit down these days. I don’t feel like I’ve been myself for a decade, in a way, which I don’t want to get into.”

Jolie and Pitt wed in 2014 after beginning their relationship in 2005 in what has long been assumed to be an affair while Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston. The couple share six children: Maddox, 22, Pax, 19, Zahara, 18, Shiloh, 17, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 15.

Elsewhere in the Vogue interview, Jolie said that being a mother “saved her.” She told Vogue: “I was 26 when I became a mother.”

“My entire life changed. Having children saved me—and taught me to be in this world differently. I think, recently, I would’ve gone under in a much darker way had I not wanted to live for them. They’re better than me, because you want your children to be. Of course I’m the mother, and hopefully that safe place for them and that stability. But I’m also the one that they laugh at—and I see them taking over so many different aspects of our family.”
