Courtney B. Vance is sharing how he and his wife Angela Bassett reacted after Bassett, 65, lost out on an Oscar at last year's Academy Awards.

"We look at it and we're the same people when they like us, when they want us and when they don't. So we just keep moving," Vance, 63, tells PEOPLE at Thursday's 18th annual Oscar Wilde Awards in Santa Monica, Calif., when asked about the success he and Basset have had in recent years. "Eventually the world comes around to you and then one minute you're hot, one minute you're a little tepid, but you're still you. So we really try not to let it faze us."

Bassett received her second of two career Academy Award nominations for her performance in 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever at last year's 95th Oscars ceremony. However, she lost out on the best supporting actress award when Jamie Lee Curtis won her first Oscar for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

"It hurt her feelings when she didn't win the Oscar this last go-round, but we decided to party like it was 1999 that night and they weren't going to run us home," Vance says. "So we ended up at Beyoncé and Jay-Z's party and life goes on. They gave her an honorary Oscar, which is wonderful. So we keep it pushing."

"I believe her best work is ahead of her. So maybe it re-energized people about her, but she's the most amazing actress in the world," Vance adds of Bassett's future; the actress has already made two appearances in 2024 movies so far, including a role in Netflix's new movie Damsel. "Folks who know, know and the folks who don't know, maybe they were re-energized, maybe they were energized."

Bassett received her first Oscar nomination back in 1994 in the best actress category for 1993's What's Love Got to Do with It. In January, she was awarded an honorary Oscar for her overall contributions to the film industry; she noted that Halle Berry remains the lone Black woman to win Best Actress at the annual awards ceremony during that speech.

I've always been a hard worker,” Bassett recently told PEOPLE about her approach to her career. “You have to know what to say no to as well as what to say yes to. And during this time, a lot of things have been worthy of me saying yes to.”

Vance told PEOPLE recently that Bassett remains "very shy" about her accomplishments and shared that he "flashed back to 30 years ago when they didn’t call her name, and then when they didn’t call her name last March," when she received the honorary Oscar in January. At Thursday night's event in Santa Monica, he tells PEOPLE he encouraged his wife to celebrate even after she did not win at last year's Academy Awards.

"She leaned over to me and said, 'Are we going home?' I said, 'No, we're going to party.' And then she said — anyway, we had a good time that night," Vance says. "I'm going to leave it like that."
