Angela Bassett keeps a special memory from PEOPLE in her living room.

In this week's issue, the Black Panther and 9-1-1 actress, 65, reveals that a memorable family photo of her twins Slater Josiah and Bronwyn Golden, 18, first debuted in PEOPLE Magazine when the children were infants, has a special place in her home.

"I love that picture, and it actually sits in my living room on the piano," says Bassett, who shares her twins with husband Courtney B. Vance.

What was her life like at the time of the 2006 portrait? "Just working, things coming together," recalls Bassett.

"Career seems to be humming. [You] find the one, true, beautiful love in your life. And then after years of you having the career, now you want the family. [Always wanted] the family. And then that being a bit of a struggle," she says.

Bassett and Vance dealt with seven years of fertility struggles before welcoming the twins via in vitro fertilization (IVF) and the help of a surrogate. "And then with a bit of science and a bit of faith, that came into being," remembers Bassett. "So it was a perfect moment. These two, beautiful, healthy, young beings came into being and they were just cute as can be - and they still are."

Accepting her honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards in January, the actress was joined by Vance and their twins The family of four posed for an adorable photo on the red carpet together, with Bassett surrounded by her family.

In January 2023, the actress opened up to PEOPLE about her two kids and what it would be like to see them follow in her Hollywood footsteps.

"They want to follow the success, but whether it be acting, I don't get any clues to that right now," Bassett said of their interests. "It's a little music, a little sports. But whatever they want to do, I support them."

Bassett, who took home the award for best supporting actress in a drama film during the 2023 Golden Globes for her work in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, added that she celebrated her victory with her kids by her side.

"Actually, I went home and hugged my kids," she told PEOPLE of her post-awards celebration. "They were really excited for mom to bring home a statue."
