Angel Olsen shares powerful new single “Lark”: Stream

When Angel Olsen released the title track to her forthcoming record, All Mirrors, it hinted that the indie songwriter was taking quite a creative step forward. Now, new single “Lark” demonstrates it’s not just a simple stride, but a stunning leap.

“Lark” opens with subtle power, coming in on intimate strings and Olsen’s gentle vocals as she sings, “To forget you is to lie, there’s still so much left to recover.” A beating of drums signals a grand swing upward, tense orchestral accompaniment threatening to vibrate the band to shattering. Olsen pushes her voice to dramatic heights, belting out the lyrics with pained fury. It’s gripping — almost frighteningly emotive — and yet somehow remains intimate in all its ambition.

As Olsen explained in a press release,

“‘Lark’ is a song that took many years to finish. The disjointed feelings and verses of this song began to make sense as a way for me to exercise a kind of journey through grieving, a kind of personal struggle. The message of the song developed at first from an argument I once had with someone about trust and support. Later, I pulled from recurring themes in my life as a musician and as a human that dreams for a living. It’s easy to promise the world to those we love, but what about when our dreams change and values split?”

The track serves as the second listen to All Mirrors, due out October 4th via Jagjaguwar. From the sounds of it, the My Woman follow-up is already making a case as one of the best albums of the year. Take a listen to “Lark” below via its Ashley Connor-directed video.

Olsen will head out on the road supporting her new full-length beginning in late-October. Get tickets to all her upcoming tour dates here.
