Gerard Butler goes from hunter to hunted in the new trailer for the upcoming Angel Has Fallen, as Secret Service Agent Mike Banning undertakes his most dangerous mission yet.

Banning (Butler) finds himself on the wrong side of the law in his third outing after he's wrongfully accused of setting up an assassination attempt on US President Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman).

As he escapes from custody and sets out on a mission to clear his name, Banning is forced to evade his own agency and outsmart the FBI in order to find the real threat to the President – and he soon finds himself at the centre of a nationwide manhunt for his efforts.

"There's someone else behind this, it wasn't me," Banning can be heard saying in the trailer at one point, before the ending hints he's tracked down those responsible.

"You can't hide from us," he's told, prompting Banning to reply: "Don't worry about finding me. I'll find you."

And considering Banning has successfully saved both the presidency and the British PM in previous films, we don't doubt him either.

The new film is directed by Shot Caller's Ric Roman Waugh, and also stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Tim Blake Nelson, Piper Perabo, with Nick Nolte, and Danny Huston.

Speaking about Angel Has Fallen earlier this year, star Gerard Butler praised the filmmakers for taking it in a "brave" new direction.

"We could have just made Tokyo Has Fallen and people would have had a blast, but what else would we have been saying? I'm not just going to turn up; we had to take this in a new direction," he said.

"It's the same man in the same position, but it's a much deeper, darker journey. There's still huge set pieces and we made sure not to disappoint the fans of the first two, but you're really inside this character, watching him try to get his shit together.

"I feel like we've been brave in taking this new direction. If it pays off, then maybe we make a fourth. If it doesn't, then hey, I had a blast."

Angel Has Fallen will be released on August 23 in the US and the UK.
