Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal Play Lovers in Haunting 'All of Us Strangers' Trailer

'All of Us Strangers' stars Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Claire Foy and Jamie Bell

A surreal love story unfolds in Andrew Scott's emotional new film.

Written and directed by Andrew Haigh (Weekend, HBO's Looking), All of Us Strangers stars Fleabag alum Scott as Adam, a man in London who has a chance encounter with his neighbor Harry, played by Paul Mescal.

Their meeting "punctures the rhythm of [Adam's] everyday life," according to a synopsis.

"As a relationship develops between them, Adam is preoccupied with memories of the past and finds himself drawn back to the suburban town where he grew up, and the childhood home where his parents appear to be living — just as they were on the day they died, 30 years before."

In those sequences, Adam's parents are played by Claire Foy and Jamie Bell.

Haigh told Vanity Fair about witnessing the sparks between costars Scott, 46, and Mescal, 27.

"There was chemistry between the two of them literally the second I saw them together. Both of them were pretty fearless," said the director, adding of the intimate parts: "There was no sense of them being afraid of approaching those scenes. They knew how important they were."

About the inspiration for the complicated story of grief and past traumas, Haigh said, "I didn’t have the happiest of childhoods — childhoods are complicated, especially when you’re gay, and I think a lot of the story is dealing with those elements."

"You have to deal with those things when you’re back in that environment," he added.

All of Us Strangers is in theaters Dec. 22.
