Andrew Dice Clay owes his supporting role in 2018's A Star Is Born to a chance meeting.

As Dice, 65, recently appeared on comedian Chris DiStefano's podcast Chrissy Chaos, he revealed that his appearance in Bradley Cooper's directorial debut as Lady Gaga's character's father ultimately happened after he bumped into Cooper, 48, at the legendary Los Angeles nightclub The Troubadour.

“As I’m leaving I’m passing Bradley Cooper and I go, 'By the way, you were good in [American] Sniper,' " the legendary comic recalled. "And his mother grabs me and goes, 'Not so fast, where you going?' "

Dice said Cooper's mother Gloria Campano told him that the Cooper family were fans of his comedy, and that he left the club after telling Cooper, "I just want to say I think you’re a great actor."

Some time after that interaction, the comedian said his manager Bruce Rubenstein reached out to A Star Is Born producer Todd Phillips and "sends them this email that says, ‘Dice is this weirdly great actor.’ "

"So all of a sudden we get a call, Bradley Cooper wants to sit with me, because he met me at [The Troubadour]. And I all talked about were my sons, for three hours we’re sitting there," Dice says. The day after that meeting, Dice said Cooper texted him and asked him to meet with Gaga, 37, while she recorded music for her role as budding superstar Ally.

"We’re talking about being on tour and I said I used to do what you would do, and she knew all about it — her father Joey is a big fan," Dice said, before claiming he sat in on the drums for at least one song featured in the film.

"And all of a sudden [Gaga's] assistant is behind me with an iPad, and I played the song for the dummer the way it’s meant to be played," he continued. "So as this is happening, here comes Cooper, watching this. And he says, 'Let’s go in another studio, just the three of us.’ So he goes, ‘Alright, Dice, I just want to try some scenes.’ I go, ‘Bradley, I haven’t read the script yet, it’s a thick script.’ He goes, ‘Let’s just try a fun scene. You’re in the kitchen, you’re having your morning coffee. Just fun father daughter-stuff.’ And it was really good."

Dice added that after he and Gaga ran through another acting exercise that left both actors in tears, Cooper resolved to cast him in the movie. He told host DiStefano that he received the official offer two days later.

“He goes, ‘I want to offer you the part as Lorenzo, Stephanie’s father.’ I couldn’t believe it," Dice recalled of Cooper's phone call. "It blew my mind. Third billing."

Aside from Cooper, Gaga and Dice, A Star Is Born also featured performances from Sam Elliot, Anthony Ramos, Dave Chappelle and Brandi Carlisle. The movie received eight Oscar nominations at the 2019 Academy Awards; the song "Shallow' won for Best Original Song.
