Andra Day Hopes for an 'Out of Body Experience' Performing at Super Bowl 2024: 'Gonna Be Shaking Like Hell'

Day will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing" at this year's Big Game — and prays her nerves won't get to her

Andra Day is anxiously awaiting her 2024 Super Bowl performance!

On Thursday, the Grammy-winning singer and actress was joined by Post Malone, and Reba McEntire as they sat down with Apple Music’s Nadeska Alexis to give fans an update on what to expect for this year’s Big Game. Halftime show headliner Usher later joined the press conference.

All of the aforementioned artists are performing during different segments at the annual sporting event, with Day, 39, taking on “Lift Every Voice and Sing."

Speaking on stage before press during a livestream, the host referenced the song as “the Black national anthem.” Alexis asked the “Rise Up” singer how it felt preparing to share “such an important piece of our culture with the world."

“More than anything, it’s an honor. It’s exciting,” Day replied. “And it feels intentional. I like to do things with intention and with purpose.”

She added that she had recently spoken to her mother about the upcoming performance and that the pair agreed that the “song is a hymn.”

“It’s a hymn of triumph, and that’s what I want people to encounter when I sing this song. I want them to know that we have victory and we have peace already… It feels like there’s an honor,” Day continued.

The entertainer explained that the ask previously felt like somewhat of a “burden,” but now it’s more of a chance for her to “spiritually” connect with God.

“I feel like you might have an out of body experience while performing,” Alexis said.

“I hope so!” Day replied, joking. “I hope so, that’d be great, ‘cause my body’s gonna be shaking like hell.”

She has previously taken on intentional roles such as her portrayal of the late American jazz singer Billie Holiday in 2021’s The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

At the time, the “Stand Up for Something” artist applauded Holiday for her “iconic music, her history, her life, [and] her activism.”

"She was willing to give up her life and ultimately did but the legacy of the song and her strength lived, and it lives in every single one of us,” Day said of Holiday’s “Strange Fruit.”

In addition to her performance this weekend, Malone, 28, will sing “America the Beautiful” during the pre-game telecast. McEntire, 68, will open the show by performing the national anthem at the Big Game, and Usher is the headliner of the Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show.

“It’s an honor of a lifetime to finally check a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list. I can’t wait to bring the world a show unlike anything else they’ve seen from me before,” Usher previously said in a statement.

The 2024 Super Bowl is scheduled for Feb. 11 with the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas.
