André Braugher, the Emmy winning actor known for Brooklyn-Nine-Nine and Homicide, has died at age 61. Deadline reports that the acclaimed actor passed after battling a brief illness.

Terry Crews, who starred alongside Braugher in NBC’s hit show, typed a tribute to him on Instagram.

“Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent,” he typed. “This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like.”

“Rest In Peace, André. I love you, man.”

NBC also released a statement in the aftermath of André’s passing. The network spoke to the beloved actor‘s character and his much celebrated on-screen performances.

“André Braugher was the actor that others in the profession would always aspire to be. In addition to his prowess as a dramatic actor, his comedy chops were also on full display as the determined and passionate Capt. Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. We will miss him tremendously.”

Braugher won over the hearts of millions after his appearance in the 1989 film, Glory. Edward Zwick’s film featured an ensemble cast that included Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Matthew Broderick, and more. Braugher shined in the movie, staring as the sensitive soldier, Corporal Thomas Searles.

He then played Jackie Robinson in the TV movie The Court-Martial of Jackie Robinson in 1990. Homicide: Life on the Street soon followed in 1993, where André played detective Frank Pembleton. The intense performance would earn him an Emmy award. André’s second Emmy award would arrive for his role in the FX miniseries Thief.

However, his most synonymous role in recent memory arrived with Nine-Nine. Starring as the no-nonsense Captain Ray Holt, André exercised his comedic chops as he returned to yet another police precinct. The hit show lasted eight seasons and earned him additional Emmy nominations for his intensely hilarious role.

VIBE sends our deepest condolences to the Braugher family and all those impacted by this loss.
