André 3000 bringing flute tour to Detroit in February with 3 intimate concerts

For his long-awaited solo debut, André 3000 rocked the music world with an album focused not on hip-hop, but on something off the wall: 90 minutes of flute instrumentals.

Now the Outkast veteran is taking his flute fixation on the road, including three small-scale Detroit shows coming very soon: Cliff Bell’s at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 8 and a pair at the Masonic Temple’s Chapel venue on Feb. 9, where he’ll play a matinee at 5 p.m. and an evening show at 8:30 p.m.

Tickets for all three of André 3000’s Detroit shows will go on sale at 10 a.m. Wednesday through axs.com.

Cliff Bell’s and the Chapel — with capacities of 250 and 400, respectively — will mean intimate performances for André 3000 and his band, including Carlos Nino, Nate Mercereau, Surya Botofasina and Deantoni Parks, part of the cast of musicians who performed on André 3000’s record.

The flute tour follows the November release of “New Blue Sun,” an eight-track collection of lengthy, ambient numbers with a new-age flourish.

Detroit is one of six cities on the New Blue Sun Live tour, which will kick off next week in New York — including a run at the fabled Blue Note jazz club — and wrap up in March in Los Angeles.
