Anderson Cooper’s Sons Each Have Their Own 'Delicious' Giggle, But Have Not Inherited His (Exclusive)

The CNN anchor has previously gone viral for having laughing fits on TV

Anderson Cooper has previously gone viral thanks to what he has called his “peculiar” giggle. But his sons — Wyatt Morgan, 3, and 19-month-old Sebastian Luke — haven’t inherited the unmistakable laugh he says he got from his late mother, Gloria Vanderbilt.

“The kids have delicious giggles, but not the same as my mom and me so far,” the journalist, 56, says in the new issue of PEOPLE.

Cooper first made headlines in 2011 after he fell into a giggle fit on his CNN show Anderson Cooper 360 after reporting on French actor Gerard Depardieu, who urinated on a plane in front of other passengers.

“All I have to say is they should thank their lucky stars it wasn't Depar-two," he said before breaking into laughter.

He later told Entertainment Weekly he’s always “giggled like a 13-year-old girl at a Justin Bieber meet and greet.”

“There’s nothing I can do about it but I’ve never not been able to stop,” he continued. “I’m a little stunned by how many people have seen that video. I went to bed telling myself, ‘I doubt anyone will notice the giggle fit.’ I woke up and in the elevator the first thing my building super said to me was, ‘What’s wrong with your laugh?’”

“It could be worse: I could have a viral video in which I throw up on a guest or drunkenly eat a hamburger on a bathroom floor,” he quipped. “Not that I’ve ever done either of those things. Not yet at least.”

In PEOPLE’s new cover story, Cooper opens up about co-parenting Wyatt and Sebastian with his friend and former partner, nightclub owner Benjamin Maisani, 50.

“This is the best time in my life,” he says. “There is no doubt about it. I feel moments of such bliss, humor and gentleness and sheer delight that it stuns me.”

Cooper lives with Maisani and the boys in Manhattan as well as at their New England country home. He says he loves the “routine” at their place in Connecticut.

“We have the diner we go to every morning — they like the folks who run the diner very much,” Cooper continues. “And they love to swim. I love getting them ready for their afternoon nap and sitting with them and reading and then having them fall asleep in my arms. There’s nothing better.”

Raising the boys with Maisani has been “very natural,” adds Cooper, who dated the entrepreneur for many years until 2018; they remained close and decided to co-parent the boys together after the journalist welcomed them through a surrogate.

“I work nights, and so he’s there at night. And we both wake up right before they wake up, get them their milk and spend the first couple of hours of the day just us with them,” Cooper tells PEOPLE. “And Benjamin speaks French to them. I have no idea what they’re saying. I think they’re plotting against me.”
