Amy Ryan Replacing Tyne Daly in Broadway Revival of ‘Doubt’

Tyne Daly will leave the upcoming revival of John Patrick Shanley’s “Doubt” after she was “unexpectedly hospitalized” on Friday. She will be replaced by Amy Ryan, the Oscar-nominated star of “Gone Baby Gone.”

The production said that Daly must receive medical care but is expected to make “a full recovery.”

The Tony Award winner was slated to play Sister Aloysius, the principal of an all-boys Catholic school in the Bronx, opposite Liev Schreiber as a charismatic priest who may have a dark secret. The roles were originally played by Cherry Jones and Brían F. O’Byrne — she won a Tony and he was nominated. In the screen adaptation, Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman both picked up Oscar nominations for their performances.

For performances through Feb. 11, the role of Sister Aloysius will be played by the understudy, Isabel Keating.

This revival is produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company and directed by Tony Award nominee Scott Ellis (“Tootsie,” “Take Me Out”). “Doubt: A Parable” began performances in February 2024 at the American Airlines Theatre.

“With respect and admiration for Tyne, we wish her the best and a quick recovery,” Ellis said. “We are grateful that Amy Ryan said yes – in a quick minute – to join our company and take on the role of ‘Sister Aloysius.’  We deeply appreciate Isabel Keating, who remarkably stepped in with a day of rehearsal and allowed us to get the production up on its feet during this first week of performances.”

Daly is a six-time Emmy Award winner and a Tony winner. She is best known for her work on “Cagney & Lacey” and “Judging Amy.” Her Broadway credits include a revival of “Gypsy,” “Rabbit Hole” and “Mothers and Sons.”

Ryan, whose credits also include “The Wire” and “The Office,” will begin performances on Feb. 13. On stage, Ryan was nominated for two Tony Awards for her performances in “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “Uncle Vanya,” both Roundabout Theatre Company productions.
