Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes are opening up about their “year of hell” on their new podcast, “Amy and T.J.”

The former GMA3 hosts got candid about their emotional struggles after their relationship was “outed” by leaked photos of them together in upstate New York. Robach even recalled an instance when she had to rush over to T.J.‘s apartment after receiving alarming texts from him days after the photos leaked.

“It was hard,” Robach admits during the Dec. 5 premiere of their iHeartRadio podcast, “Because anyone who was a viewer or anyone outside of a very small circle didn’t know that either one of us were getting divorced, so that was one of the challenges we had in the beginning.”

Robach reveals the texts read, “I’m sorry, you were the love of my life. I’m so sorry this has happened,” and the past tense of that message made her worry.

T.J. admits to “pounding vodka” and “weed edibles” that day, resulting in his “incoherent” state of mind when sending those messages. “When I was sending them to you, I didn’t know how I was sounding,” Holmes says. “I’m not sure where my head was at that time.”

Holmes continued, “I didn’t stop for several hours. I took who knows how many weed edibles, and that’s how I ended up in the state I was in.”

Panicked by the situation, Robach recalls stepping into his apartment to perform a “welfare check.”

“I remember going down the hall, opening the door, and my dad came in with me. And I saw you and you were just splayed out on your bed,” an emotional Robach recounts. “I ran to you. I said, ‘T.J.!’ and you didn’t move. And I remember, it was the most awful thing, having to touch your body to see if you were warm. I was so afraid. You were just incoherent.”

Robach struggled mentally amid the scandal, too.

“There were days where I wanted to die and that was something I’d never experienced before in my life. I just didn’t want to get up. I didn’t want to see what new headline was going to be out there.”

“To feel like, you know, who is still behind me? Who supports me? Will I work again? Will I ever be trusted again?” she explained. “Will people believe what really happened versus what people have written happened?”

Exactly one year after the former ABC journalists were ousted from the network, the duo now says the narrative surrounding their relationship was inaccurate.

“To be clear, we were outed as being in a relationship,” Holmes expressed. “But everyone else thought we were being outed as adulterous, being outed as cheating on our spouses and it wasn’t the case. Because the odd thing is that the day those pictures were taken and the day that article was released, we had both, at that point, been in divorce proceedings.”

The couple first sparked romance rumors in November of 2022 after being photographed together in New York. At the time, Robach was still legally married to actor Andrew Shue and Holmes was married to Marilee Fiebig.

“It was one of those things where everyone in my tight circle knew I was getting divorced. I took my ring off early August,” Robach explains. “It was very clear to anyone who knew me that I was in the middle of a divorce. T.J. is a much more private person than me and just chose to keep that to himself.”

The former GMA3 hosts, who recently made their red carpet debut, have since moved forward calling the past year a “total reset.”

“It has been the most beautiful relationship I have ever had in my life,” she says. “I am in love with this woman and she’s in love with me,” Holmes adds “and we’re planning a life together.”
