Amy Robach is looking back at a “terrifying” experience that occurred shortly after the public learned of her relationship with T.J. Holmes.

During the first episode of iHeartRadio's Amy and T.J. Podcast, the former GMA3: What You Need to Know co-anchor, 50, revealed that she did a “welfare check” on Holmes, 46, in November 2022 after photos of them cozying up together surfaced. At the time, Robach had not confirmed her separation from her actor husband Andrew Shue, nor Holmes with his attorney wife Marilee Fiebig.

Holmes admitted that he said her text messages in “the past tense,” telling Robach, "When I was sending them to you, I didn't know how I was sounding. I'm not sure where my head was at that time.”

Robach recalled alarm bells going off when she saw a text message from Holmes, which read, "I'm sorry, you were the love of my life. I'm so sorry this has happened."

After being unable to reach Holmes and receiving messages from ABC crew members who also couldn’t get in touch with him, she began to “panic,” adding, "I was so afraid that he had done something."

Robach and her father then raced in an Uber to Holmes’ apartment to check on him while she was “pretty hysterical” about his mental state.

"I remember going down the hall, opening the door, and my dad came in with me. And I saw you and you were just splayed out on your bed," Robach recalled as she became emotional. "I ran to you. I said, 'T.J.!' and you didn't move. And I remember, it was the most awful thing, having to touch your body to see if you were warm. I was so afraid. You were just incoherent."

Despite Holmes “making no sense,” Robach was relieved to find him alive.

The journalist admitted that the incident occurred after he “immediately started pounding vodka” after work.

"I didn't stop for several hours,” he shared. “I took who knows how many weed edibles, and that's how I ended up in the state I was in.”

"That combination was terrifying,” Robach responded. You weren't moving and I'll never forget that night.”

As for Robach, she also struggled in the aftermath of the relationship going public. She compared the experience to her breast cancer diagnosis in 2013.

"You go through cancer, and, yes, you're afraid to die, but you're fighting to live," she explained. "And you've got all these people around you, supporting you and cheering you on, and you feel this collective hug from people who are lifting you up when you're scared and you're going through all of these treatments.”

She continued: “But this year, I wanted to die. There were days where I wanted to die and that was something I'd never experienced before in my life. I just didn't want to get up. I didn't want to see what new headline was going to be out there and that has been such an eye-opening experience.”

Since then, Robach and Holmes have become more comfortable showcasing their relationship publicly, with many of their romantic outings occurring both at home and abroad. Over the weekend, Robach and Holmes made their red carpet debut as a couple at iHeartRadio's Jingle Ball 2023.
