Tom Ford is a celebrated fashion designer-turned-filmmaker, and his background as creative director of Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent was evident throughout his directorial debut, 2009’s A Single Man starring Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Nicholas Hoult, and Matthew Goode. His mannered art-magazine style is apparent yet again in the new trailer for Nocturnal Animals, his second trip behind the camera, which will arrive in theaters later this fall after having won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the 2016 Venice International Film Festival.

Nocturnal Animals stars Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal as former acquaintances who, after a chance encounter, fall into a relationship. Their amour is not to be, however, as revelations about their past — as well as their unstable psychological and emotional conditions — soon send things spiraling wildly, violently out of control. As definitively reconfirmed by this promo, if Michael Shannon shows up in your life wielding a gun, you’ve likely passed some horrible point of no return.

Delivering what appears to be a healthy serving of brutal pulp, albeit in a gorgeously mannered form, Nocturnal Animals was praised by Variety’s Owen Gleiberman earlier this year as “a suspenseful and intoxicating movie — a thriller that isn’t scared to go hog-wild with violence, to dig into primal fear and rage, even as it’s constructed around a melancholy love story that circles back on itself in tricky and surprising ways.” CatchNocturnal Animals in theaters beginning Nov. 18.
