'America's Next Top Model' goes without makeup and makes history

On America’s Next Top Model, Tyra Banks asked the nine remaining contestants to do something that not many models would be comfortable with: a photo shoot with no makeup. The purpose was to make the models vulnerable, which it absolutely did. Some joked about it, but it brought out fairly raw and long-held emotions in others.

“I’m fine without my makeup,” Jeana said. “I’m just kidding. No. I have zits.”

Brendi K. wasn’t taking the shoot so lightly. “After all these years, she [her mother] still can’t tell me that I’m pretty without makeup, without hair,” she said. “I just never felt like I was good enough.”

And while Erin and Khrystyana were forced to face demons from the past, Kyla had a different takeaway from the experience.

“In society, women are constantly pinned against each other,” Kyla said. “So to do a photo shoot where we’re just baring our natural beauty and we have the actual physical portrayal of support of our fellow models, it’s really beautiful.”

The shoot went so well that, in the end, something happened for the first time in the history of ANTM: At panel, seven of the nine models tied for best photo.

America’s Next Top Model airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on VH1.
