‘The Americans’ Stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys Recall When He Drunkenly Hit On Her Years Ago

Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, co-stars on The Americans and real-life lovebirds, stopped by Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, where they told the story of how they first met. It wasn’t on the set of their hit show, which has been on the air since 2013. They actually met much earlier than that, some years ago, after a kickball party.

“We actually met a very long, long time ago. And I very drunkenly asked her for her number when she was a young, single, slip of a thing. So I sort of knew then, when I was 26,” Rhys explained. He added, “It was in a parking lot. Very romantic. And she asked me to open a beer.”

Russell forgot all about that encounter. One day while they were preparing for The Americans Rhys told her that they’d met, but Russell didn’t believe him, not until he reminded her of the drunken message he’d left all those years ago.

“As soon as he said that, I knew exactly what he was — I was like, ‘Oh, of course I remember that,’” Russell said.

Russell and Rhys welcomed their first child together in May of last year.
