American Idol’s Top 24 Perform: Which Singers Get Your Vote From Night 1?

After finalizing its Top 24 earlier this week, American Idol opened the voting lines on Sunday, turning the power over to the audience for the first time all season.

Mentored by Tori Kelly, who’s making a very good case for herself as Katy Perry’s replacement next season, the first half of the Top 24 took the stage at Disney’s Aulani Resort in O’ahu for a series of intimate performances that could make or break their future in the competition. (No pressure!)

And what would a trip to Hawaii have been without a visit from Iam Tongi, last season’s Idol winner, to serenade us all with his single “Why Kiki?”

Voting for these 12 singers began Sunday at 8 pm ET and will remain open through 6 am ET on Monday. The other half of the Top 24 will perform during Monday’s episode (8 pm ET), at which point voting will open for those singers; that window will close on Tuesday at 6 am ET.

Idol offers three ways to vote: on the official website (americanidol.com), on the American Idol app (available in the App Store), or by texting the number of your preferred contestant to “21523.” You can see every singer’s number listed below.

Read on for a breakdown of Sunday’s 12 performances, then weigh in via our poll below. Which of these singers do you hope make it into Top 20?

HAILEY MIA (1)

The vocals were definitely there throughout Hailey’s performance of Tate McRae’s “She’s All I Wanna Be,” but the 16 year old’s biggest challenge will be finding the confidence to push herself beyond what she’s giving us right now. We wouldn’t recommend copying Lionel Richie’s moves exactly, but if she doesn’t do something to make herself stand out, she runs the risk of being swallowed up in the competition.

JORDAN ANTHONY (2)

If you prefer your runs served extra nasty, you probably ate up Jordan’s take on Sia’s “Titanium,” which grew into something really exciting after a somewhat subdued start.

TVLINE’S GRADE: “B+.”

JAYNA ELISE (3)

We actually think Jayna could have gone bigger with Demi Lovato’s “Confident,” though her swagger certainly embodied the title. It was fun watching her make the song her own.

TVLINE’S GRADE: “B+”

JULIA GAGNON (4)

We can’t knock the vocals on this one; the newly engaged Platinum Ticket winner delivered a solid park-and-bark performance of Adele’s “Rumor Has It.” But did anyone else want to shake her a few times just to wake her up? Come on, now!

TVLINE’S GRADE: “B”

KAYKO (5)

It might not have been our first choice for this particular venue, but Kayko’s original song about losing his mother was absolutely beautiful. He showed us exactly who he is with this performance, both as a songwriter and as a performer. You could feel him in every single note.

TVLINE’S GRADE: “B+”

NYA (6)

There’s something thrilling about watching a singer stand in their power and let loose, and that’s exactly what Nya did with Tina Turner’s “The Best,” never once questioning her own talent for going for a note that would send lesser singers running in the opposite direction. And if Idol doesn’t end up working out for Nya, this performance doubled as a heck of an audition for the national tour of TINA: The Tina Turner Musical.

TVLINE’S GRADE: “B+”

BLAKE PROEHL (7)

This was one of the few performances of the night that really left something to be desired. He came to life when he finally took his microphone off the stand, but that turned out to be a blessing and a curse; he got a little too confident sometimes, reaching for high notes in Justin Bieber’s “Anyone” that simply weren’t there.

TVLINE’S GRADE: “C+”

ABI CARTER (8)

There was nary a trace of bronchitis left in Abi’s voice as she took on Hillsong United’s “Oceans,” a performance loaded with stand-out moments. Her little scream-cry? A moment. That a capella breakdown? A moment.

TVLINE’S GRADE: “B+”

QUINTAVIOUS (9)

Didn’t make it to church today? Don’t worry, Quintavious has us all covered. His command of Carrie Underwood’s “Something in the Water” had all of Aulani on their feet. No one put more of themselves into their performance tonight. And did anyone else think he was about jump into a full split at the end? Maybe we’ve been watching too much RuPaul’s Drag Race.

TVLINE’S GRADE: “A–”

KB (10)

Why does this show keep making us think that KB is going to crash and burn before every performance, only for her to consistently soar? KB’s raspy take on Bryan Adams’ “Heaven” was an absolute treat. Sometimes we get so focused on her singer-songwriter vibe that we forget how big her voice can get.

TVLINE’S GRADE: “B+”

WILL MOSELEY (11)

Tori Kelly put it perfectly when she told Will that his voice makes her feel “safe and warm.” There’s a timeless quality to his vocals that shined through clearly in his performance of Otis Redding’s “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay.” It was so good, so effortless, so natural — we wouldn’t even know how to critique it. No notes, only respect.

Grade: “A–”

MCKENNA BREINHOLT (12)

We can’t imagine a better way to end the night than by listening to McKenna absolutely crush Brandi Carlile’s “The Story,” a perfect song choice, both vocally and thematically. From those chilling low notes to the raspy belting moments, it was good. Very good. Wake-you-up-from-a-coma good. (Where are all my Grey’s Anatomy fans?)
