The Top 7 artists on “American Idol” Season 22 each performed twice on Sunday, May 5 — a dance song and an Adele song — with audiences voting live coast-to-coast for their favorites. (Read our minute-by-minute recap.) Ultimately, after nearly 19 million votes were cast, host Ryan Seacrest announced that the pair of singers who were eliminated prior to next week’s Top 5 episode were Julia Gagnon and McKenna Faith Breinholt. And fans were shocked!

Throughout the competition, Julia delivered tunes like “Ain’t No Way” (Auditions round), “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” (Showstopper round), “Rumour Has It” (Top 24 round), “I Believe” & “Need a Favor” (Top 20 round), “Run to You” (Top 14 round), “Something in the Orange” (Top 12 round), “Here I Am” (Top 10 round), “Wide Awake” (Top 8 round) and “Roam” & “Set Fire to the Rain” (Top 7 round). The 21-year-old college student from Cumberland, ME made a splash early on “Idol” when she received one of only three platinum tickets in the auditions.

Following Julia’s Top 7 performance of “Set Fire to the Rain,” judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie had nothing but love for the fan-fave. Lionel likened her to a “superstar” and told her to “drop the mic,” Katy raved about her “strategy choices” and gave her an “A+,” and Luke noted how she looked “free” and “didn’t even worry one second.”
