“American Idol” reveals top 3 finalists as Loretta Lynn's granddaughter gets eliminated

On the show's Disney Night, two singers, including Emmy Russell, had to say farewell.

American Idol is belting its way toward a season 22 champion. The singing competition narrowed the field to three singers during Sunday's episode, and that trio did not include the buzzy Emmy Russell, granddaughter of country legend Loretta Lynn.

In an episode rich with corporate synergy, the five contestants spent time at a Disney-owned theme park and sang Disney songs, a catalog that includes music from Pixar and Marvel films. Even the judges got in the spirit, with Katy Perry arriving fully decked out as Cinderella.

The two-hour episode featured Russell, Abi Carter, Jack Blocker, Triston Harper, and Will Moseley each taking the Idol stage to sing a pair of Disney tunes. Russell, who has gained fans with her emotional performances and disarming timidity, sang "The Climb" from Hannah Montana: The Movie and "Carried Me With You" from Pixar's Onward, pushing her stage presence to a new level.

However, it wasn't enough to convince fans. Russell, along with Harper, who sang "Almost There" from The Princess and the Frog and "Life Is a Highway" from Cars, didn't garner enough fan votes to advance to the finale.

After her first song and a heap of compliments from judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, Russell teared up. "I got emotional," she told host Ryan Seacrest before pointing out family and friends in the audience. "I'm just thinking about, like, this entire journey, I can't even, my best friend, my cousins, and mom, I'm really grateful, even to be at this point."

That means Moseley, Carter, and Blocker are the final three, competing to join the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia Barrino, and Carrie Underwood on the list of the show's victors.

They'll do so during Perry's final episode. The "Roar" singer announced in February that she is leaving American Idol after seven seasons. She made the reveal on Jimmy Kimmel Live, saying she has been "in the studio" and is ready "to go and see the world and maybe bring new music."

The three-hour season finale will feature guest mentor Jon Bon Jovi, as well as performances from Nick Fradiani, New Kids on the Block, Jason Mraz, Hootie and the Blowfish, Cece Winans, James Bay, Seal, Bishop Briggs, Cody Johnson, past winner Nick Fradiana, and last season's mega mentor, Wynonna Judd.
