Three longtime members of the American Idol family returned on Monday to honor one of their own — Season 5 contestant Mandisa, who died on April 18 at age 47.

Colton Dixon (Season 11), Melinda Doolittle (Season 6) and Danny Gokey took the stage for an emotional group performance of Mary Mary’s “Shackles,” a song Mandisa covered when she was in Season 5’s Top 10 back in March 2006.

Following news of Mandisa’s death, the show released this official statement: “Mandisa was an adored icon on American Idol and in the music industry. She had become a platinum-selling artist and had won several Grammys for her music. Her passing has left everyone on the show heartbroken, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family.”

Mandisa made it all the way to the Top 9 in her original season, the start of what would become an incredibly successful music career. She released six studio albums, beginning with 2007’s True Beauty, and she won Best Contemporary Christian Music Album at the Grammy Awards for 2013’s Overcomer.

Of course, Dixon, Gokey and Doolittle — who famously co-hosted TVLine’s Idology series alongside the great Michael Slezak — aren’t the first American Idol alumni to visit this season. We recently got performances from Season 18 winner Just Sam and Season 10 champ Scotty McCreery. The show also welcomed back Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta for a taste of his new single. And let’s not forget Tori Kelly, whose Idol journey was cut short back in 2009, serving as a guest mentor in Hawaii.
