American Idol Contestant Apologizes to Katy Perry After Admitting He Idolizes Taylor Swift

On Sunday’s new episode of American Idol, one contestant found himself apologizing to Katy Perry as he revealed his musical idol: Taylor Swift.

“I’m sorry for this, Katy,” he said. “Taylor Swift. I love Taylor Swift.”

“Oh, you don’t have to be sorry,” replied Perry, a judge on the competition series. “I love her as a songwriter as well.”

Throughout the years, tension had built up between Perry and Swift after an alleged feud developed over backup dancers — of which Perry admitted to James Corden during an appearance on the Late Late Show. Swift has never publicly commented on the matter.

Though there was speculation that Swift’s “Bad Blood” was written about the Perry, the 28-year-old singer has never confirmed which artist the song’s lyrics reflect on.

During an interview on The Thrive Global Podcast in June 2017, Perry admitted that she’s ready to put her feud with the “Look What You Made Me Do” singer behind her for good.

“I am ready to let it go,” Perry told Thrive CEO Arianna Huffington. “I forgive her and I’m sorry for anything I ever did, and I hope the same from her … I love her, and I want the best for her. And I think she’s a fantastic songwriter.”

“Maybe I don’t agree with everything she does and she doesn’t agree with everything I do, but I just really, truly want to come together in a place of love and forgiveness and understanding and compassion,” the singer added.

Perry has already had some memorable contestant interactions in just the first few episodes of Idol, laughing off a wardrobe malfunction and giving one competitor his first kiss — which he has since revealed was “unwanted” before later clarifying that he was “not complaining.”

American Idol airs on Sundays and Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
