'American Idol' closes Top 24 as Jewel disagrees with Katy Perry and Madison Watkins bonds with Tori Kelly over faith

It's up to the voters now.

ABC's "American Idol" finished its two-night Top 24 performances Monday, with the remaining 12 singers taking the Los Angeles stage for solos and duets with Jewel, Jason Aldean, Josh Groban and other music stars.

Following Sunday's example, each contestant performed in front of a small, mask-wearing studio audience, along with "Idol" judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.

Viewers, who have until Tuesday at 6 a.m. EDT to cast their votes, will decide which eight of Monday's singers will advance to the Top 16, with results announced on Sunday's show (8 EDT/PDT). Fans can vote at americanidol.com/vote, the "American Idol" app or via text message.

The night featured a rare moment of dissent as guest performer Jewel, watching backstage, disagreed with Perry's assessment of one contestant's demeanor on stage.

Jason Warrior

Music teacher Jason, 25, opened the show with a fully felt rendition of The Weeknd's "Call Out My Name," before pairing with gospel-album Grammy winner PJ Morton for the Bee Gees "How Deep Is Your Love."

Perry called it "probably the best solo and duet performance I've seen so far," but wanted to see him take a few more artistic risks: "Expand. Let's put on a real show!"

"That was as much old school as new school as your school," marveled Richie. "Take a bow on that one."

Madison Watkins

Madison, a 26-year-old hair model, showed off her big voice singing Justin Bieber's "Holy" before taking on Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" with Tori Kelly. During a brief discussion of faith, she told Kelly it was "so cool to have a girl to look up to that also loves God."

Bryan saluted the range of Madison's performance. "You're such a personality, you're such a natural entertainer and your look is so striking," Bryan said. "But your voice really, really showed up today."

Perry, noting the full hairstyles of the two singers, said, "My first thought was, 'What do your guys' shower drains look like? That's a lot of hair."

Beane

Wedding singer Beane, 23, energized the crowd with his performance of Dua Lipa's "Don't Start Now." Then he joined with Josh Groban on Robbie Williams' "Angels," describing the recipe as taking "some of that Josh Groban spice, put it in the Beane soup and we're serving it up."

Richie noted Beane's presence: "You made us turn around on every note to say, 'Hey, I'm here!' And we noticed exactly what you were doing."

Perry said she'd sign him to a deal, citing some vocal runs with Groban that "were so pro I would invest in you any day."

Hannah Everhart

Seventeen-year-old high school student Hannah brought an earthy feel to Chris Stapleton's "I Was Wrong," then collaborated with fellow Southerner Aldean on one of his songs, "She's Country," but not before sharing a plate of ribs during rehearsal.

"Your personality is so infectious and once your talent catches up with the star you are, it's going to be so fun to watch," Bryan said.

Richie offered encouragement. "Believe in yourself. You've got the goods."

Mary Jo Young

Real estate sales associate Mary Jo, 19, skillfully picked up the tempo during Ed Sheeran's "Castle on the Hill" before teaming with Jewel on the music star's "Pieces of You."

Perry said she was "so proud" of Mary Jo for being "your own artist," while Richie told her not to try to act older. "You're young, you're fresh and you represented your generation."

Chayce Beckham

Chayce, a 24-year-old heavy machine operator, played his guitar while giving some growl to Ed Sheeran's "Afterglow." He joined Brandon Boyd of Incubus for a powerful performance of the group's "Drive."

Perry envisioned a big career for Chayce: "Grammys everywhere." Bryan commented on his vibe: "You've just got this cool thing. Springsteen cool."

Colin Jamieson

Colin, 22, another wedding singer, brought a fun stage presence to Bruno Mars' "Locked Out of Heaven." He asked Kelly about her experience as a young singer on "American Idol" before combining on her hit, "Hollow."

Perry was impressed with Colin's professionalism. "You look like you play 300 shows a year." Richie praised his authenticity before offering advice: "Never get tangled up in a mic stand," he said, suggesting he throw it to the side. "Attitude will take you everywhere."

Liahona Olayan

Liahona, a 17-year-old high school student, displayed great stage moves during Audrey Mika's "Just Friends," closing with an acrobatic high kick. She teamed with Morton, who encouraged her to show her emotional side – "Less head, more heart" – before they took the stage for his song, "Say So."

"Do you know how far you've come from the little shy person we saw to now?" Richie asked, noting Liahona's development as a performer. Bryan, who has been critical in the past, commended her for pushing herself: "I like you leaning in. It looks good on you."

Liahona fans can text 20 to 21523 to help her "Idol" chances.

Ava August

Ava, a 15-year-old high school student who is now this season's youngest competitor, mixed in some impressive high notes with a plaintive feel on Olivia Rodrigo's "drivers license," then went much older school for Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" with Groban.

"Do you realize you are singing far beyond your age? If this is you at 15, you with your driver's license are going to be terrifying" as a performer, Richie said.

Bryan offered a huge compliment. "That's like watching Judy Garland up there."

To give the contest's youngest singer a chance to advance, text 21 to 21523 for Ava.

Caleb Kennedy

Another high school student, Caleb, 16, gave a rough-edged vibe to The Allman Brothers' "Midnight Rider" before a duet on Aldean's "Fly Over States."

"This song came out when I was in kindergarten," Caleb said. "You don't have to bring that up, man," Aldean responded.

Bryan said it was fun seeing Caleb " go outside your comfort zone," while Richie said the young singer was "possessed by a very old, seasoned country man."

Texting 22 to 21523 will help Caleb move on in the competition.

Hunter Metts

Software developer Hunter, 22, opened Sia's "Chandelier" with a spare presentation, picking it up toward the end. Duet partner Jewel noticed his resemblance to a certain celebrity – "I didn't know Ryan Phillippe had a brother" – before they teamed on her hit, "Who Will Save Your Soul."

Richie pressed Hunter to give more: "I need from you to feel confident enough to lean forward." Perry told the singer he has superstar potential but that she felt "a little fear in your eyes." That remark led Jewel, watching backstage, to respond, "What? No! I really thought he gave a lot more."

Casey Bishop

Casey, a 16-year-old high school student, closed the two-hour show, skillfully pulling off some big notes in her rendition of Paramore's "Decode." She then rocked out with Boyd on Incubus' "Wish You Were Here."

Perry was mesmerized by "that voice and that attitude and that rock." She pressed Casey to “get a little bit angry” on stage, throwing in a salty phrase that caused Richie to get up from his seat, exclaiming “Whoa!” Bryan encouraged her rocker persona: "You have the voice to do it, the look to do it. Now get the attitude and bring rock back."
