The show's first installment ended with a cliffhanger.

American Born Chinese has been canceled by Disney+ after just one season 1, EW has confirmed.

The series' first installment ended with a cliffhanger, and while it's unclear if viewers will ever learn its characters' fates, its producers are shopping the show around, hoping to finding it a home elsewhere.

Adapted from Gene Luen Yang's award-winning graphic novel of the same name, American Born Chinese combines a true story with magical fantasy. It follows Jin (Ben Wang), a high school teen who just wants to fit in with his classmates but whose life is disrupted by the arrival of exchange student Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu), whose loud and open personality starts to embarrass Jin. However, it turns out that Wei-Chen is actually the son of the mythical Monkey King (Daniel Wu), who has come to Earth on a quest to find the Fourth Scroll and prevent the destruction of Heaven. Though aided by the mercy goddess Guanyin (Michelle Yeoh), Wei-Chen relies on Jin as his guide to the human world.

The season 1 finale revealed that Jin himself is the Fourth Scroll. Together, he and Wei-Chen defeat the villainous Bull Demon (Leonard Wu) and save Heaven from destruction. But given that Jin's parents (Chin Han and Yeo Yann Yann) were abducted by Bull Demon's wife, Princess Iron Fan (Poppy Liu), the show was clearly meant to continue. Though Yang never wrote any comic-book sequels to American Born Chinese, its connection to Chinese mythology means that many other characters could be added to the story.

"The possibilities are endless," Yeoh told EW last year. "The stories that can be told have so many complex multilayers that the writers and the directors will have so much space. The playground is so immense."

American Born Chinese may live to see another day, but for now the first season of the series, which EW included on our list of the best TV of 2023, is streaming on Disney+.
