American Airlines takes off as Qatar Airways eyes 10% stake; Oracle jumps on earnings; Staples up on deal talk

Here’s a look at some of the stocks the Yahoo Finance team will be tracking for you today.

American Airlines (AAL) is in focus after receiving an unsolicited notice from Qatar Airways indicating that it wants to make a “significant” investment in the US airline, amounting to about a 10% stake. Shares of American Airlines are higher in early trading. Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A) has a 10% stake in American.

Sticking with the airline sector, Argus is bullish on Southwest (LUV), upgrading its rating on the stock to buy from hold. The firm also raised its price target to $68 bucks, implying shares could rally 11% from Wednesday’s closing price.

Oracle (ORCL) is jumping after reporting earnings that topped Wall Street expectations after the bell yesterday. Better-than-expected results were driven by its cloud business;
revenue in that segment soared 58% to $1.4 billion.

And Staples (SPLS) shares are moving higher following a Reuters report that private equity firm Sycamore Partners is in advanced talks to buy the office-supply retailer. The deal could be worth more than $6 billion.
