American Airlines Passengers Restrain Man with Duct Tape After He Tries to Open Plane Door Mid-Flight

Flight 1219 was heading to Chicago from Albuquerque, New Mexico when the incident occurred on Tuesday

• A Chicago-bound American Airlines flight had to return to Albuquerque International Sunport on Tuesday after a man tried to open the emergency exit mid-flight. 

• Multiple passengers had to work together to duct tape the man’s legs and tie his hands behind his back in an effort to restrain him. 

• The plane returned safely to Albuquerque where law enforcement officials took over. 

American Airlines passengers had to hold a man down and duct tape his legs after he attempted to open one of the emergency exit doors mid-flight.

Flight 1219 was heading to O’Hare Airport in Chicago from Albuquerque, New Mexico on Tuesday when “a disturbance in the cabin involving a disruptive customer” prompted the plane to turn back shortly after takeoff, the airline confirmed to PEOPLE.

In a video of the disturbance captured by a fellow passenger, a man can be seen attempting to open the emergency exit door as multiple other passengers surround him and try to hold him down. A child can be heard crying in the background and another flier asks, “What’s going on?”

After successfully tying his hands behind his back and duct taping his legs together, at least four passengers then drag the man through the aisle. “They got him, they got him,” another flier can be heard saying.

After the flight returned safely to Albuquerque, local law enforcement took over, the airline spokesperson added.

Another video, shows the aftermath: the man is seen being escorted off the plane by law enforcement officers with his hands still restrained behind his back.

X user @DonnieDoesWorld documented the incident in a post and says he was one of the passengers to help restrain the man.

Along with sharing a photo of the chaos on the plane, the user wrote: “30 minutes after departing Albuquerque I was shaken out of my Panda Express and Tequila induced stupor by a man trying to aggressively open the airplane door 4 rows back.”

He adds that he and “5 other dudes had to wrestle him into the aisle” after duct taping the man’s legs and throwing “flexi-cuffs” on him. “Just safely landed back in ABQ but HOLY S—,” he concluded in the post.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the incident, per their website. The Albuquerque Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
