AMC to Run 88-Hour ‘Walking Dead’ Marathon This Month

Maybe you’ve been meaning to check out “The Walking Dead” but haven’t managed to get around to it sometime in the last six years. AMC is trying to make it easy for you to catch up with an 88-hour “marathon” of sorts starting on Sunday, Oct. 16.

AMC won’t quite be airing all 88 episodes of “The Walking Dead” in a row. Season 1 and the first half of Season 2 will air on Sunday, starting at 7 a.m. ET, leading up to a special two-hour retrospective on the series Sunday night, which you might want to avoid if you haven’t seen past the second season.

Throughout the rest of the week, each evening from 6 p.m. through the wee hours of the morning, the remainder of the 88 episodes will run. The marathon will conclude with the Season 6 finale and its cliffhanger that caused at least 14.2 million ulcers, just before the Season 7 premiere on Oct. 23 at 9/8c.

The “Walking Dead” marathon is just part of AMC’s annual Fearfest programming stunt, which runs palindromically this year, from Oct. 13 through Oct. 31. For those three weeks, viewers can feast on horror classics like the original “The Exorcist,” “Chucky,” “Halloween,” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street” plus myriad sequels and prequels. In all, the network will serve up 400 hours of hair-raising, stomach-churning visual entertainment.

This will be the 20th year AMC has run its Fearfest. In fact, the annual stunt was part of the reason the network greenlit “The Walking Dead”—AMC president Charlie Collier saw the thirst for horror on the network and figured an original horror series would probably find an audience. “The Walking Dead” now garners the largest live audience of advertiser-coveted 18-49-year-olds on TV (excluding the NFL).
