Amber Heard says she has faced severe repercussions for publicly accusing her ex-husband Johnny Depp of spousal abuse.

While appearing at the Create & Cultivate conference in New York over the weekend, the Aquaman star alluded to her nasty divorce from the Pirates of the Caribbean actor, who is suing her for $50 million claiming that she defamed him by writing her Washington Post op-ed about being a survivor of domestic abuse in December.

“I’m somebody who has obviously suffered the full force of the wrath of our culture when a woman or a survivor speaks up against a more powerful force,” the 33-year-old said, not mentioning Depp by name.

“I’ve seen that firsthand ― from death threats to harassment to bullying to invasions of my privacy to threats to my career to my livelihood, my safety — and yet I’m still here,” Heard continued. “I’m here because I refuse to accept those be the terms of my silence. I refuse to accept those be the terms that other people, who are in positions of power, who seek to maintain the status quo, have set for me. I refuse to stand in line. It can work and it will work as long as you stand up for what’s right and speak your truth. If you’re quiet, you’ll be ignored.”

Heard also said that when she looks back at her life and “all the things I’ve done,” she’ll certainly be proud of “my professional accomplishments and movies,” also including The Danish Girl and The Adderall Diaries. However, she added, “That is nothing in comparison to the pride I feel for what I stood up for because it was right and true. I did that despite what it cost me. That wealth of pride gives back to me and will give back to my daughters and their daughters a million times over. I am proud I did the hard stuff. I would rather be unpopular. I would rather go down for being who I am than to be popular for something I'm not.”

During the chat, Heard also spoke about being bisexual — and, early in her career, going against advice she received saying she shouldn’t reveal that she had relationships with women.

Heard filed for divorce from her The Rum Diaries co-star Depp in 2016 after a year of marriage and also received a temporary restraining order against him after claiming he had been abusive and detailing the abuse under oath. They reached a settlement later that year and their contentious divorce was finalized in early 2017.

However, Depp claimed in his January 2019 lawsuit that Heard violated their nondisclosure agreement by writing her op-ed entitled: “Amber Heard: I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change,” which his lawyer said "depended on the central premise that Ms. Heard was a domestic abuse victim and that Mr. Depp perpetrated domestic violence against her” even though she didn’t mention him by name then either.

Since then, Depp has called Heard’s narrative an “elaborate hoax” and said she’s a liar. Just days ago, Depp’s legal team suggested that Heard and a friend concocted a plan for a bogus 911 call claiming Depp assaulted her. He has also claimed that she was the abusive one in their marriage. The case is ongoing.
