Amazon Reviving Sid and Marty Krofft’s ‘Sigmund and the Sea Monsters’ for Prime Video

Sid and Marty Krofft are coming to Amazon Prime. The legendary producing duo is reviving 1970s kid show cult classic “Sigmund and the Sea Monsters” for Amazon, with David Arquette starring as Captain Barnabas.

For those who may have missed it during its initial run in the ’70s, the original “Sigmund” centered on brothers Johnny and Scotty, who find and befriend a young sea monster named Sigmund and his own dysfunctional brothers Slurp and Burp. The Amazon revival will add in Johnny and Scotty’s cousin Robyn and Arquette’s Captain Barnabas, who’s on the hunt for the young sea monsters.

The Kroffts built a TV monster empire in the 1970s, with “Sigmund,” “H.R. Pufnstuf,” “Land of the Lost,” and various other series, though “Sigmund” was their only Saturday morning kids’ series that was produced for a second season.

“Sigmund and the Sea Monsters” on Amazon is executive produced by the Kroffts, with the pilot directed by Jonathan Judge. Garrett Frawley and Brian Turner (“Santa Baby”) wrote the new teleplay based on the original series.

Looking to further beef up its kids’ programming, Amazon has also ordered “The Bug Diaries,” aimed at the preschool set. Based on the children’s books written by Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Harry Bliss, “The Bug Diaries” follows a trio of bug buddies — Fly, Worm, and Spider — as they embark on various adventures.
