Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is taking this Emmy race seriously.

With stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine leading the charge, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” which draws inspiration from the 2005 movie featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, is set to compete in the drama categories at this year’s awards ceremony.

Crafted by Glover and Francesca Sloane, the show’s debut season stretches across eight episodes, centering on John and Jane Smith, secret agents who pose as a married couple while working for a shadowy corporation. Its blend of comedy and drama offered the potential to categorize it in either genre for awards consideration.

Glover, already an Emmy favorite for his role in FX’s “Atlanta,” is in contention for five Emmy nods this year: drama series, actor in a drama series, directing in a drama series and two for writing. Glover, who clinched the lead comedy actor award in 2017 for his portrayal of Earnest ‘Earn’ Marks in “Atlanta,” became the second Black man to win the category, following Robert Guillaume’s triumph for “Benson” in 1985. That same year, Glover also achieved a historic win for directing the “Atlanta” episode “B.A.N.,” marking him as the first and (still only) Black person to win in that category. With a career tally of 11 Emmy noms, his most recent nom was last year for outstanding writing for the Prime limited series “Swarm,” alongside Janine Nabers.

Maya Erskine, acclaimed for her role in Hulu’s “Pen15,” where she humorously navigates the trials of adolescence alongside Anna Konkle, simply shines in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” With three Emmy nods to her name as a writer and producer, Erskine could find her way to her first acting recognition, leveraging the seemingly thin drama category landscape to her advantage.

In addition to the main drama categories, the show will also vie for attention in guest acting including for notable stars such as Paul Dano, Michaela Coel, Wagner Moura, Sharon Horgan and more.
