‘The Amazing Race’s’ Anthony and Bailey explain their multiple Detour switcheroos

Anthony and Bailey Smith didn’t run the smoothest Mega Leg on “The Amazing Race 36,” but the third leg was definitely not the charm. Starting at the back of the pack in Medellín, Colombia, the twin brothers quickly fell behind and made matters worse on their own when they switched Detours three times, ultimately leading to their elimination.

“We definitely struggled and all we can do is laugh at it,” Anthony tells Gold Derby (watch above). “I was excited all day to watch it but also, like, pacing myself. I was getting ready for the downfall.”

The duo initially picked the truck-loading Detour and then switched to cooking. But they didn’t even turn on the burners before they opted to go back to trucks. After spending approximately 15 minutes there, they decided to return to cooking. “We were being a little too indecisive for our own good,” Bailey says. “I think switching from Willys to cooking [the first time] was OK. I think it was just switching back and forth again. I think we would’ve had time had we switched once and stuck with that and committed.”

As for why they didn’t even attempt cooking the first time, the bros were intimidated by the instructions being in Spanish. “We were like, ‘We’re gonna have to translate this,’ which obviously wasn’t hard,” Anthony explains. “The other teams managed to do it just fine, but for us, we were a little bit behind. We started at the back of the pack. We came up and it was like, ‘Dude, we can’t read this. What does this say? Let’s just go back to the Willys. There’s no reading there. We just throw some stuff on.'”

When they switched for the final time, they knew for sure they were dead last, though they were not too far behind as they arrived at the Pit Stop about 10 minutes after Michelle and Sean. “We knew it was bad. We knew the fans would get a kick out of it too,” Anthony says.

“As long as we can provide comedic relief,” Bailey quips.

Fans also got a kick, for a different reasons, last week when the two revealed that they did not know who Elizabeth Taylor is. Don’t worry, they do now. “That is one of the things that I’ve gotten the most messages about from fans. But yeah, I did my research. My grandma was not happy I didn’t know.

“There was a lot of people who were upset about that one, so we’re sorry to Elizabeth Taylor and all her fans out there,” Bailey adds. “We’re gonna watch a couple movies after this.”
