‘The Amazing Race’s’ Angie and Danny reveal their crew never showed up to the Detour

Leg 8 of “The Amazing Race 36” started off promisingly for Angie and Danny Butler in Bridgetown, Barbados. They left in second place and Angie crushed the road tennis Roadblock. But then came the roundabouts. They lost their crew, who were in another car and took a different turn, and had to wait for them at the Detour before they could continue racing. That was enough to push them to the back of the pack, leading to their Philimination. But what you didn’t see was that their crew never actually showed up to the Detour.

“The crew had a local driving them, so it wasn’t an ‘Amazing Race’ crew that was driving them,” Danny tells Gold Derby (watch above). “And when they turned left, we immediately pulled over to the right. You immediately see us telephoning our crew. We’d also been debrief at security, ‘Hey, if you feel unsafe or get separated from your crew and know how to get to your next location, just go to your next location and wait there.’ And so when we get to our next location, we’re there and the crew never shows up. You see in the clip, like, ‘Oh, our crew has arrived.’ Our crew didn’t arrive. They grabbed another crew that was there because our crew was still lost.

The mother and son sat in their car for 45 to 50 minutes, watching team after team arrive and pass them. While it might seen unfair that they were penalized for something that wasn’t their fault, the pair just feel grateful for the experience and are rolling with the punches.

“Things happen. Life happens,” Angie says. “I don’t think it was a matter of fair or unfair. It’s just something else that happened on ‘The Amazing Race.’ We got to be the people that it happened to. And that’s the way that it’s supposed to be. We’re grateful. We were put in that race. We just feel so thrilled that God blessed us with that opportunity. And then we were taken out of that race and it was time for us to be done. We’re just super thankful for all of it. We don’t blame anybody. We’re sad a little bit. We could’ve gone further, absolutely. Would we have liked it to look different? Sure. But could we control it? Nope, we couldn’t. So why worry about it, right?”

Before their leg and race got derailed, Angie and Danny had already given fans a memorable moment when they were en route to Rihanna‘s childhood home. Angie asked who the singer was and for Danny to sing one of her songs. He struggled. “Here’s what’s so funny. Danny did start singing some songs, but they were all Alicia Keys songs. And I knew Alicia Keys because I run to her, I train to her,” Angie shares. “We get to her house and [the cameramen] are just laughing. And so they yell, ‘Umbrella’! We had just gone through a monsoon, so I said, ‘Ugh, we’re gonna need our umbrella again.’ And Danny goes, ‘No, mom! The song ‘Umbrella’! She sings ‘Umbrella’! And I was just like, ‘OK.'”
