Everyone experiences changes and challenges in their careers from time to time. But something happens for a number of women who go back to work after becoming a parent. Amanda Seyfried opened up about how her job changed drastically once she became a mother, and she was very candid about what she’s experienced.

“In my career, it’s still a bit new to play a mother,” the actress said at the Berlin Film Festival press conference for her film Seven Veils, per Variety. “It seems like once I popped out a baby, I was just playing mothers, and that’s Hollywood for you,” she said. Seyfried shares two children with husband Thomas Sadoski — a six-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son.

While Seyfried acknowledged how much the roles she was offered changed once she became a parent, she also noticed that the characters were so much more nuanced. “But I do think that the roles have become way richer and definitely challenging in ways that I didn’t have earlier in my career,” the Mank Oscar-nominee shared.

Speaking on her new film, Seyfried said, “I felt like Jeanine, specifically as a mother, trying to figure out where she stands in her life as a parent and as a wife who is so on the precipice of separating from her husband — she’s kind of hanging on a thread everywhere and not being taken as seriously as she’d like to in her career, just wanting more.”

Seyfried also noted that with “every really good script and really fleshed-out character, I always am able to reflect on my own life. That’s just a side effect of my job, which I kind of love.” Seyfried’s filmography has certainly expanded since she had her breakout performance in 2004’s Mean Girls. With her first Oscar nomination under her belt and plenty of projects in store, we’re excited to see how her career continues to change.
