Alyssa Milano has been vocal about her recent struggles with hair loss, which she attributes to being a “long-hauler” of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Back in August, the Charmed alum, 47, uploaded a video to her Instagram and Twitter accounts demonstrating the amount of hair that falls out when she uses a detangler brush after showering. “One brushing, this is my hair loss,” she said in the footage while holding up a clump of hair.

Most information surrounding COVID-19 long-haulers is preliminary and still being studied by experts, but currently, medical professionals are using the term to describe those who have lingering COVID-19 symptoms months after their initial diagnosis. Along with Milano, other long-haulers have reported hair loss as one of their ongoing symptoms. According to a non-peer-reviewed symptom survey conducted in July 2020 by Natalie Lambert, PhD, of the Indiana University School of Medicine, 423 out of 1,567 COVID-19 survivors who participated in the survey listed hair loss as a symptom.

Like most people, celebrity hairstylist Linh Nguyen found out via Twitter that Alyssa Milano was dealing with hair loss. But unlike most people, Nguyen had Milano’s number saved in his phone, as well as an extensive list of anti-thinning hair products to recommend to her. Right away, he said he thought of Nioxin, a hair care brand that’s specifically designed for fine and thinning hair.

“I told Alyssa, stop brushing your hair, we’re sending you Nioxin treatments right away,” Nguyen told PEOPLE.

Sure enough, Nguyen sent Milano a full Nioxin regimen, with the goal of improving her scalp and hair health. He gave her an array of Nioxin shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, and hair treatments to test, which Milano eventually pared down to her favorites: the Nioxin System 6 Kit and the Nioxin Minoxidil Hair Regrowth Treatment. Nguyen was excited to discover that Milano loves both these hair products so much, she still uses them.

“The best text I got this week was Alyssa saying her hair is doing much better and she’s continuing the Nioxin regimen,” Nguyen said. “Her hair feels thicker and she’s happy with the results.”

Formulated for chemically treated hair with progressive thinning, the Nioxin System 6 Kit is a comprehensive set containing a shampoo, a conditioner, and a scalp and hair treatment for $30. Each product contains ingredients like biotin and hydrolyzed silk to moisturize and strengthen hair, as well as to prevent breakage. The three-part system also works to remove follicle-clogging sebum from the hair, thanks to its pro-color shield technology. Multiple reviewers on Amazon raved about how “thick and full” their hair looked after using the products.

Milano’s other favorite, the Nioxin Minoxidil Hair Regrowth Treatment, is a topical solution designed to reactivate hair follicles and stimulate regrowth. It’s infused with minoxidil, an ingredient used to treat male-pattern baldness and promote growth in females with thinning hair. You can apply the colorless, scentless formula to the top of the scalp using the included dropper up to twice a day.

Overall, Nioxin’s tried-and-true treatments are meant to improve scalp health for thicker, healthier hair over time. Its products cater to six different hair types — including natural, colored, and chemically-treated hair — and differentiate between light and progressive thinning. Shoppers can pick the products that work best for their specific hair concerns, whether that’s thinness, dryness, or damage.

But these products aren’t just for treating ponytails that are smaller than they used to be. They’re also preventative and aimed at treating hair with the same thoroughness and dedication as skin. As Nioxin brand representative Michael Long says, “Nioxin is for everyone,” whether you love your hair as is, or you see some room for improvement.
