MONROE — Altrusa International of Monroe is continuing its literacy efforts this summer.

Member Angel Williams recently took her two grandsons and her daughter to deliver books to small free libraries in Monroe and LaSalle.

“This effort is part of the 2023 Altrusa Loves Literacy Project,” Nancy Williams of Altrusa International of Monroe said. “Earlier this year, books were donated to grades 1 through 3 at Jefferson North Elementary School.”

Altrusa will hold a book reading at 6 p.m. on Aug. 15 at Altrusa Park in downtown Monroe. Dr. William L. McCloskey will read “Bug Soup.”

“This delightful story describes the zoo dietitian making soup for many animals,” Williams said.

Thirty copies of the featured book will be distributed to children on a first-come, first-serve basis. Another 100 assorted books for pre-kindergarten through third grade will be available to attendees.

“The American Library Association reminds us that students without books in their home are on an average three years behind students who have books aplenty at home,” Williams said.
