Pieces Interactive announced the Alone in the Dark remake in August 2022, yet fell silent quickly after. The team has now come out and not only revealed the Alone in the Dark remake release date, but also detailed some of its gameplay and the free prologue that sets up the base game.

When is the Alone in the Dark remake coming out?

The Alone in the Dark remake is coming out on October 25, 2023 for $59.99 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Those who pre-order will get DLC that turns the characters into polygonal beings that look like their 1992 counterparts.

Pieces also announced that Stranger Things’ David Harbour and Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer are playing Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood, the game’s two main playable characters. Writer and game director Mikael Hedberg, who’s known for writing Frictional Games’ first two Amnesia titles and Soma, said that players will have to play the game twice to see everything since some events unfold differently.

The game plays out like a psychology horror game like a moody mix of the Resident Evil 2 remake and Silent Hill. Players have to shoot hideous monsters with Resident Evil 4-like shooting mechanics and solve various puzzles along the way. Hedberg noted that the game’s horror was “more than just jump scares.”

There’s also a free prologue that will give players a taste of the game. It’s called Grace in the Dark and it is out now for free on all platforms. It takes place a couple of weeks before the main game and lets players control Grace Saunders, a young child. It’s a callback to Jack in the Dark, a promotional game meant to advertise Alone in the Dark 2, which is fittingly where Saunders first appeared. Grace in the Dark won’t have combat, though, given the age of its protagonist.
