The long-awaited Doja Cat and Dolly Parton-starring Mexican Pizza: The Musical is set to premiere September 15th, and ahead of its release, Miss Dolly herself has shared some insight about working on this many-layered project.
Written by Hannah Friedman with music by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Mexican Pizza: The Musical follows the “‘harrowing’ story of those who fought to bring back the Mexican Pizza” in the form of a TikTok, since Doja Cat first inspired Taco Bell to bring back the item after she sang about it on the app. Parton stars in the musical alongside Doja and Victor Kunda, another content creator who made a video of his own hypothesizing what the choreography to a Mexican Pizza musical would look like.
“What a fun time and what a fun idea to be part of the Mexican Pizza musical,” Parton said in a statement to Consequence. “It was a joy working with Doja Cat, Barlow and Bear, and Victor. Very cool. I would say it was ALMOST as good as a Mexican Pizza!”
Mexican Pizza: The Musical was originally slated to premiere back in May, but the project was postponed. As a consolation, Taco Bell added an entire third act to the project to really beef (pun intended) it up. To coincide with the news, the fast food chain shared a new song about the Mexican Pizza’s cult favorite status, which you can listen to below.
Mexican Pizza: The Musical premieres on Taco Bell’s TikTok September 15th at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT. The Mexican Pizza officially returns to Taco Bell menus the same day, and to celebrate, fans can get a free one in a minimum $20 order from Uber Eats and Postmates from September 15th to 21st. The Mexican Pizza is exclusive to those delivery services until the 21st, and then becomes available on Postmates, Doordash, and Grubhub as well (with the same free pizza deal available on Grubhub from September 23rd to 25th).
Parton continues to be a national treasure by both donating her money to pediatric infectious disease research and creating a line of dog toys and apparel that she brilliantly named Doggy Parton. This holiday season, she’ll star in Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas on NBC. Doja Cat, meanwhile, has been accessorizing these days with a shaved head and eyebrows, which prompted fans to check in on her wellbeing (She’s rich and fine, she said).
