Ally McBeal Cast Reunites, Dances to Barry White at Emmys — Watch Video

If you’ve been searchin’ your soul tonight and hoping that the cast of your favorite quirky ’90s dramedy would reunite at the Emmys? Your prayers have been answered.

Ally McBeal stars Calista Flockhart, Peter MacNicol, Greg Germann and Gil Bellows hit the stage together at Monday’s ceremony as part of the celebration marking the Emmys’ 75th anniversary. Before presenting the Emmy for best lead actor in a drama series, Flockhart danced to Barry White in an on-stage mockup of Ally’s infamous unisex bathroom. A bearded MacNicol then joined her from a bathroom stall, followed by Germann and Bellows. “I loved working with Peter, Gil and Greg,” Flockhart told the crowd, adding: “And I still do.”

If you can believe it, it’s now been 26 years (!) since Ally McBeal first debuted on Fox in September 1997. The series, which starred Flockhart as a daydreaming Boston lawyer always pining for romance, won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in 1999 for its sophomore season, with MacNicol winning for best supporting actor in a comedy in 2001 for his role as eccentric law firm partner John Cage.

Germann played smarmy law firm partner Richard Fish, and Bellows played Ally’s ex-boyfriend and now law firm colleague Billy. Ally McBeal’s cast also included Courtney Thorne-Smith as Billy’s wife Georgia, Jane Krakowski as receptionist Elaine, Lisa Nicole Carson as Ally’s roommate Renée, Portia de Rossi as lawyer Nell and Lucy Liu as Nell’s friend and frequent client Ling.

Ally McBeal was a cultural phenomenon during its five-season run, which ended in 2002. Last year, ABC began developing an Ally McBeal sequel series led by a Black female character who is Renée’s daughter and works at Ally’s old firm Cage & Fish.
